Motivational Interviewing [CLO: 2] |
Prior to beginning work on this week’s discussion, please read Chapter 10: Alcohol Prevention and Treatment: Interventions for Hazardous, Harmful, and Dependent Drinkers in Riekert, Ockene, and Pbert (2018) and Moyers (2014) The Relationship in Motivational Interviewing. Be sure to also watch the Behavioral Health and Wellness Program (2015) Motivational interviewing for tobacco cessation (Links to an external site.) video.
Motivational Interviewing is a person-centered approach that helps clients explore areas of concern from a place of autonomy. In this week’s discussion, you will have the opportunity to practice motivational interviewing skills with a case simulation. Review the client’s demographic information, presenting complaint, and psychosocial history. Next, select three questions you would ask the hypothetical client.
In your initial post, share which three questions you selected. Provide a rationale for why you selected each question, supporting your response with information from the Moyers (2014) article. Next, list at least one Follow-up question and statement you would make after hearing Jake’s responses.
Guided Response: Respond to two peers who selected at least two different questions than you and evaluate your classmate’s rationale, follow-up questions, and additional statements to the client. What follow-up questions or statements would make after hearing Jake’s response.
