Identifying Cultural Needs

The purpose of this Assignment is to analyze the health concerns facing different cultures and to compare cultural health practice and belief differences.

Communities provide distinctive environments for examining culture.

You have explored:

  • care of the adult population from differing global cultures
  • the many cultural health practices and belief differences of cultures
  • the use of evidence-based practice to support culturally competent care
  • the role of the nurse in providing care in different healthcare systems

Now, you will apply this knowledge to your own environment.

  • Conduct a literature review of five evidence-based, peer-reviewed resources related to best practices for providing culturally competent care across the lifespan related to two different cultures.
  • Create a 5–10-slide PowerPoint presentation, excluding the title and reference page(s) that includes the following information:
    • List the two different cultural populations you have chosen.
      • what region(s) they are from
      • language(s) spoken
      • any other pertinent information about the populations
    • Compare cultural health practices and beliefs of the two patient populations.
      • Give a clear description of each populations’ basic beliefs on health care from birth to death
        • labor and delivery
        • pediatrics
        • adults
        • elderly/aging
        • death
      • Varying health issues that are typical among the population (i.e., Eastern European: Tay-Sachs, African American: Sickle Cell Disease, etc.).
      • Identify, based on the literature, three specific and detailed culturally competent practices for the transcultural nurse to apply for each culture identified (six total).

Be creative. Use images, charts, animations, and anything else you may need to accurately get your point across to the reader.

You must include speaker’s notes to elaborate on the information you provide in the slides. Please review the tips below for further guidance on creating a meaningful Microsoft® PowerPoint® presentation.

Here are a few tips:

  1. Use the notes section of PowerPoint. It is very useful for writing out the majority of the information you want to present. The slides should be clutter free, simple, and with bullets. Keep it clear and concise.
  2. You MUST use citations and references. For clarification: citations are in the body of your work and are for paraphrased items/phrases and directly quoted items/phrases. References go at the end of the project on the last slide. The listed reference should match the authors’ names in the citations. They always go hand in hand. You cannot have references without citations, or vice versa.
  3. You do need to cite and reference pictures if they are from a webpage, book, or journal. You do not need to cite and reference pictures from clipart.
  4. Use the Assignment instructions (items 1–4) to title your slides so you do not miss any important topics for the Assignment.
