At the Playground

Imagine that you are a researcher interested in how schools can help to increase physical activity of children. You would like to investigate what role having organized activities available during recess plays in whether or not children participate in physical activity at school. You have decided to perform a qualitative observational research study by watching school children and their activities during a 30-minute recess period. On eight different occasions at eight different schools, you watch children at recess. View these eight photographs that represent the “pictures” you would have seen in person. Based on your observations, create a hypothesis. What evidence did you gather that supports your hypothesis? Analyze the elements that you can conclude about your hypothesis simply by your observations.

Guided Response: Imagine that, after having read the report of your classmate’s research, you would like to continue the investigation into the role of organized activities on physical activity of school children during recess. You decide to conduct additional research using a quantitative observational research method (e.g. cohort, case study, cross sectional) using your classmate’s hypothesis as a starting point. What quantitative data would you want to gather to investigate your classmate’s hypothesis? Describe the research design you would use to determine whether your classmate’s hypothesis was “on target”. Respond to two of your classmates.
