NU450: Unit 10 Assignment

Innovation and Strategic Planning

Introduction:

The purpose of the Assignment is to review events and key decisions that take place during a catastrophic weather emergency. It is also important to identify barriers and potential problems that could affect mounting an effective response. Nurses play an important role in disaster response as integral members of the multidisciplinary team to direct a collaborative community response to an impending or actual disaster.

To prepare for a disaster, your community must ensure that its members are ready to get through it safely, respond to it, and recover from it effectively. As a community leader in health care, the public health nurse needs to participate in developing a plan for contingencies. The nurse considers what must occur to keep the community safe if essential services break down. An organization should exercise the plan well before a disaster threatens. The public health nurse must collaborate with community leaders and health care systems to respond effectively.

As you consider your community, identify the challenges that can potentially affect the health and safety of community members in the event of a disaster. If a catastrophic event occurs, such as a Category 5 hurricane, the health and safety of aggregates in your community will be threatened and resources will be challenged. Note that a Category 5 hurricane results in the following:

  • Casualties
  • Fatalities
  • Hospitalizations
  • Infrastructure damage, including:
    • Buildings destroyed, large amounts of debris on streets and transit ways
    • Homes and businesses destroyed
  • Evacuations/displaced persons

Directions:

You will apply your knowledge of your community to identify strategies for a coordinated community response to a catastrophic event. You will support each strategy with evidence-based rationale. Cite your sources.

Using the form provided, identify how you, the public health nurse, will engage in efforts to keep your community safe. You will use the FEMA stages of disaster management. The phases are Prepare and Protect, Respond, Recover and Mitigate. Consider the following as you identify strategies necessary to optimize community safety during each phase of the disaster.

  • Availability of facilities and employees
  • Scope of practice of the public health nurse
  • Confirm and check evacuation routes
  • Availability of supplies and first aid
  • Emergency response teams
  • Actual and potential community hazards
  • Information management capabilities
  • Strategies to expedite approval to practice
  • Resources for care and shelter
  • Strategies for maintaining order
  • Preemptive strategies that enable a quicker community recovery

Discussion Topic: Environmental Health

Case study

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention Biomonitoring Program notes both individual and community assessment as necessary to determine the presence and extent of environmental health exposure. Nurses who work in the communitycan gather essential information to address concerns that threaten health.

As a nurse practicing within a family practice, you are interviewing a 55-year-old woman who is an executive assistant at a local law firm where she has worked for 9 years. She has a 7-year history of respiratory illness, which occurs several times throughout the year and is not seemingly connected to the changes in season. She does not use tobacco products in any form. During your questions regarding her home and work environments, she reports that she enjoys working adjacent to the courthouse in a building that is over 100 years old as it is such a contrast to her brand-new home on a local golf course. When describing the health of her coworkers, she indicates, “We all share illnesses which seem to affect everyone during the year. We just seem to be sicker more often!”

Consider the facts reported in this case and address the points listed below.

  • Discuss the information that is pertinent to your client’s case.
  • Discuss environmental risks that may affect the health of members of your community.
  • Discuss strategies you would use to address identified environmental risks in your community.

Analysis of Community Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats (SWOT) to Health

Analysis of Community Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats (SWOT) to Health

Introduction

In order to intervene effectively to address health issues and concerns and develop initiatives that will improve the health of the community you must analyze relevant data.

Community health nurses need to collaborate with other health professionals and community partners to understand the strengths and challenges that affect the health of vulnerable populations. To accomplish this, the nurse must have knowledge of the health status of the defined aggregates. This knowledge can be obtained by means of a SWOT analysis.

Using the community’s profile and characteristics as well as epidemiologic data that influences and defines the health of the population you will identify:

  • Strengths of the community related to the public’s health
  • Weaknesses in the community that can be barriers or deficiencies affecting access and delivery of care
  • Opportunities for improvement
  • Threats to health

Directions

Once you have analyzed data related to key health indicators in your community. Using the worksheet provided, you will address the four elements of the SWOT (S= Strengths; W= Weaknesses; O= Opportunities; and T= Threats) analysis. You will meet the criteria listed below.

  • Identify three strengths of the community related to the public’s health.
  • Identify three weaknesses in the community that can be barriers to access and delivery of health care.
  • Identify three opportunities for improvement.
  • Identify three threats to health.

Your paper should include an introductory paragraph and one concluding paragraph that provides a succinct summary of the health of the community based your analysis.

NOTE: Use the SWOT Analysis Worksheet located in Course Resources for this Assignment.

Discussion Topic: Case Study, Date Violence

Dating violence is a serious public health problem in the United States. It can have a negative effect on both mental and physical health throughout a victim’s life. Teens who are victims of dating abuse (emotional, physical, and sexual) are more likely to do poorly in school. Anger and/or stress that dating abuse victims feel may lead to eating disorders (overweight or underweight), depression, and participation in unhealthy behaviors, such as drug and alcohol use. Some teens may even consider or attempt suicide. As you consider the problem presented in the case study, reflect on other related concerns that impact the well-being of vulnerable populations.

Case

Christina is a 17-year-old high school senior. She and her boyfriend Jake have been dating for 6 months. Jake gave Christina a cell phone for her birthday last month; he calls or texts her constantly. At first, she was flattered by Jake’s attention and thought it was romantic. He never leaves her alone when they are out with others, and he becomes angry with her when she goes out alone with friends. Christina is concerned and remembers a school program on teen dating abuse. Christina visits the school nurse and describes her relationship with Jake. The nurse does a physical and mental assessment.

Questions

  • Discuss the questions the nurse should ask during the initial and subsequent encounters with Christina.
  • Discuss interventions the nurse could use at the primary, secondary, and tertiary level of intervention.
  • Discuss collaborative community-based initiatives that will address safety related to abuse.

Assignment Details

Community Assessment

Introduction

A community assessment provides the nurse knowledge of the community of interest. The characteristics of the community and relevant public health data provide valuable information related to the health and well-being of the population who live within it. A community assessment is the equivalent of a head-to-toe assessment, but instead of assessing an individual, you are looking at characteristics that define a community. The Community Tool Box website (Section 21; Windshield and Walking Surveys) will guide you as you conduct a modified community assessment.

Directions

Find a friend or someone to drive you through the community. As you travel through your community, take note of features that highlight the community’s unique characteristics.

As you explore your community, you will observe the influence of multiple factors that influence the health of the community’s population.

Aspects to observe in a modified community assessment can include:

  • Physical environment
  • Education
  • Safety and transportation
  • Politics and government
  • Health and social services
  • Recreation
  • Communication
  • Economics
  • Differences among neighborhoods or areas of the community that reflect socioeconomic status, culture, and ethnicity

Prepare a 15-slide (excluding title and reference slides) PowerPoint® presentation that addresses the characteristics of the community that you assessed. The final content slide should highlight key indicators that reflect the health of the community.

The PowerPoint presentation should include photographs, illustrations, and bullet points. Speaker’s notes must accompany each slide and be at least 100 words in length. You must include at least three scholarly, supporting references, cited within the speaker’s notes and included on the reference slide.
