HWE340 Week 5 – Journal

Observation

Imagine you accepted a new job as an exercise specialist at your local hospital working in the cardiopulmonary rehab department. You have had minimal experience working with clients over the age of 55.  You are aware there are differences in exercise capacity in younger adults compared to older individuals.  Therefore, you decided to observe this age group exercising before starting your new job. Find a facility in your area- YMCA, nursing home, fitness facility, local exercise groups, or hospital. Contact the manager or other personnel and set up a time to observe one of the exercise classes. You must observe a group exercise class. If it is not possible for you to observe a live class, please find an exercise class on the Internet of older adults participating in an exercise class.  Some places to look include  YouTubeFit, MSN, Wello, GymCube, iBodyFit.com, and Workouts On Demand.

Part One:

  • Explain your observations- where did you go or what class did you observe, approximate age of participants, characteristics of the participants such as gender, functional capacity of the adults in the class, etc.

Part Two:

  • Evaluate changes that occur in the body as a person ages and the impact this has on exercise capacity in the following areas:
    • Muscle mass
    • Joint flexibility
    • Nervous system
    • Pulmonary System Function
    • Cardiovascular System Function
  • Explain how regular exercise can decrease morbidity and mortality
  • Explain the purpose of pre-participation screenings and the Graded Exercise Stress Test
  • Evaluate two precautions you would take working with older clients compared to working with younger clients.

Your journal should be a minimum of three pages. It is acceptable to use informal tone in Part One of your journal; however, you should use a formal tone in Part Two of your journal. Your journal should be formatted in APA style. Use the text and one additional scholarly source to support your research and findings. All sources must be referenced and cited according to APA guidelines as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center. Submit your journal to your instructor as a word document by Day 5.

HWE340 Week 4 – Journal

Self-Assessment

For this assignment, you will be completing an exercise activity and explaining your own respiratory, cardiovascular, and neuromuscular responses to exercise. First, you will need to complete the PAR Q Readiness Assessment Questionnaire (Links to an external site.) to ensure that it is safe for you to complete this exercise. You must submit the PAR Q prior to doing this assignment. If you are cleared to exercise, then you may proceed with the following activity. If you are not cleared to exercise, find an adult participant who is cleared by the PAR Q Assessment and who is willing to complete it for you. You may use this person’s responses to complete the journal.

  • Sit quietly for 5 minutes.
  • Write down and explain how your respiratory, cardiovascular, and neuromuscular systems feel in a resting state. (Write down specific data for breathing rate, heart rate, intensity of muscular contraction or lack there of)
  • Next, complete the following activities: jog in place for 3 minutes. Then complete as many push- ups as you can in 3 minutes. If you cannot perform push-ups for 3 minutes, do as many as you can until you fatigue.
  • Then write down the acute responses to the cardiovascular, respiratory, and neuromuscular system that you noticed during these activities. (Write down your heart rate and breathing rate following the exercise, how do your muscles feel?  Are you short of breath? Does your heart feel like it is pounding?) (Refer to Chapter 10, Table 1 on how to calculate your heart rate)
  • Finally, discuss three chronic adaptations to each of these systems that would occur with long-term exercise.

You need to present this information through a Youtube video. Your comments should be prepared before getting in front of the camera. Your journal should be 3 to 5 minutes in duration.  Review the YouTube Webcam Quick-Start Guide on how to create a YouTube account and create a YouTube video journal.  Submit a Word document that contains the URL to your YouTube video journal, your comments, and references by Day 7. Use the text and one additional scholarly source to support your research and findings. All sources must be referenced and cited according to APA guidelines as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.

Resting and Exercise State of the Respiratory, Cardiovascular, and Neuromuscular Systems [CLOs: 1, 2, 5]

Prior to starting this discussion, review the required resources. Since you are the fitness expert, imagine your friend Megan, a 27-year-old adult female, has come to you for advice and information.  She has never exercised regularly before, but as she gets older, she wants to take charge of her health and begin a regular exercise program. She has decided to start jogging three days a week and wants to prepare to participate in her first 5K race in three months. She is interested in knowing how her respiratory, cardiovascular, and neuromuscular systems will react at rest and during exercise.  Choose one of these systems to explain to your friend Megan, and compare its functioning at the resting and exercise state.  In your response, address the following:

  • Identify the system you chose
  • Explain the major organs that make up this system
  • Compare how this system functions at rest to how it functions during exercise. Parameters to consider:
    • Respiratory System:
      • Tidal Volume
      • Minute ventilation
      • Depth and rate of ventilations
      • Gas exchange in the tissues
      • Ventilation limits
    • Cardiovascular System:
      • Heart rate
      • Stroke volume
      • Cardiac output
      • Blood pressure
      • VO2 Max
    • Neuromuscular System:
      • Chemical and mechanical action of the muscles
      • Oxygen uptake
      • Removal of waste products
      • Motor unit recruitment
      • Force of contraction
  • Explain two chronic adaptations in the system you chose that occurs with exercise.

Use the text and one additional scholarly source to support your research and findings. All sources must be referenced and cited according to APA guidelines as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center. Your initial post should be at least 250 words in length and be submitted by Day 3 to the discussion forum.
