HWE200 Week 5 – Final Project

Personal Behavior Change Plan

[WLOs: 4, 5] [CLOs: 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7]

For your Final Project, you are to develop a personal behavioral change plan. After completing the assessments throughout the course, you should have a good idea of your wellness strengths and your weaknesses. Choose one dimension of wellness that you would like to change. (The dimension should be clearly stated. For example, state “physical dimension” instead of “exercise”).

Discuss each of the following areas in your plan:

  • Identify the wellness dimension you want to improve. Explain why you chose this dimension. In your response, describe your previous assessments and examine at least three lifestyle factors (diet, exercise, substance use, etc.) responsible for low assessment results in the dimension of wellness you chose to improve.
  • Compare your current behaviors to the ideal behaviors for each of the lifestyle factors that you identified. For example, if you selected stress as a lifestyle factor that contributes to your low assessment of emotional wellness, then compare your current stress-related behaviors (fighting with family, eating sweets, watching TV, drinking alcohol, etc.) to ideal stress management behaviors (appropriate conflict-resolution, meditation, daily exercise, massage, deep breathing, etc.). Select a minimum of one current behavior and one ideal behavior for each of the three lifestyle factors that you identified.
  • Describe the health risks and diseases associated with your current behaviors. Explain how your current behaviors would lead to these negative consequences if left unchanged.
  • Review the Stages of Change (Transtheoretical model) in Chapter 1 of your course textbook. Explain this model and discuss your readiness to change. Include which stage of change you are in currently and why you feel this way.
  • Imagine that you were ready to plan for change, and identify three behaviors you could adopt to decrease your health risk and improve your specified dimension of wellness. Use the previous information to help with your selection.
  • Review the supplemental material on the social cognitive theory, theory of planned behavior, health belief model, and Transtheoretical model provided in Week 1. Using these theories and models, discuss how each one may be able to predict your success in making this change. In your reply, explain the use of models and theories in health and wellness.
  • Describe three barriers (one barrier per behavior change) that may prevent you from making these changes. Barriers to behavior change are discussed in Chapter 1 of the course text.
  • Discuss one way to overcome each of your barriers.
  • Refer to the development of SMART goals in Chapter 1 of your text and develop three of your own SMART goals. Be sure to include all the parts of a SMART goal (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Time Frame) for each goal set. As you discuss these in your assignment, explain your objectives and why you chose these goals.
  • Finally, develop a wellness philosophy based on your own values and beliefs and from what you have learned in this class.

Create a PowerPoint presentation with a minimum of 8 slides (excluding title and reference slides). Within the presentation, include detailed speaker notes for each slide. See the How to Make a PowerPoint Presentation (Links to an external site.) resource for additional guidance. Your behavioral change plan should use a minimum of four scholarly sources in addition to the course text, cited in APA format as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.

The Final Project

  • Must be 8 to 10 double-spaced slides in length (not including title and references pages) and formatted according to APA style (Links to an external site.) as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center (Links to an external site.).
  • Must include a separate title page with the following:
    • Title of paper
    • Student’s name
    • Course name and number
    • Instructor’s name
    • Date submitted
  • Must begin with an introduction that has a succinct thesis statement.
  • Must address the topic of the presentation with critical thought.
  • Must use at least four scholarly sources in addition to the course text.
    • The Scholarly, Peer Reviewed, and Other Credible Sources (Links to an external site.) table offers additional guidance on appropriate source types. If you have questions about whether a specific source is appropriate for this assignment, please contact your instructor. Your instructor has the final say about the appropriateness of a specific source for a particular assignment.
    • To assist you in completing the library research required for this assignment, view the How Do I Begin? (Links to an external site.) tutorial, which provides an overview of conducting searches in the library, generating keywords, and understanding your assignment prompt.
  • Must document all sources in APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.
  • Must include a separate references page that is formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.

Carmen: Cardiovascular Disease Case Study [WLOs: 1, 2] [CLOs: 2, 3, 7]<

Prior to beginning work on this assignment, examine the relationship between cardiovascular health status and wellness by reading Chapter 10 in the course text.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the number one killer of both men and women in the United States (American Heart Association, 2013). Many risk factors are associated with CVD. A risk factor is a variable which can increase a person’s risk of developing a disease such as family history, obesity, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol. Chronic diseases, such as heart disease, can have a direct impact on a person’s wellness. Making healthy lifestyle changes can decrease a person’s risk of heart disease and other chronic diseases.

Carmen, from the Week 1 Dimensions of Wellness Case Study discussion and the Week 3 Weight and Body Composition Self-Check, did not heed your suggestions for improving her wellness. As a result, Carmen, now 58 years old, has developed cardiovascular disease. Due to her continued diet of fast food and sedentary behavior, she has gained 20 pounds and has a BMI of 28; her blood pressure is 152/80 mmHg; her total cholesterol level is 230 mg/dL, and she does not meet the physical activity guidelines for adults. Recently, she has also been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes and is determined to make a behavior change.

For this discussion address the following in your response:

  • Summarize Carmen’s controllable risk factors for heart disease.
  • Discuss the relationship between the lifestyle factors of poor diet and sedentary behavior to heart disease (particularly discuss the formation of plaque within the arteries). Use a reference to support your explanation.
  • Explain the current recommendations for healthy levels of BMI, cholesterol, blood pressure, and physical activity.
  • Devise a plan for Carmen to reduce her risk factors. The plan should include detailed dietary guidelines (recommendations for specific amounts of fat, cholesterol, caloric intake, etc.) and physical activity guidelines to include each of the FITT principles.

Include the text and one additional scholarly reference correctly cited in APA style (Links to an external site.) as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center (Links to an external site.) to help support your response. See the Citing Within Your Paper (Links to an external site.) and Formatting Your References List (Links to an external site.) resources and the Scholarly, Peer-Reviewed, and Other Credible Sources (Links to an external site.) document for additional guidance.

Cigarette Smoking Presentation

[WLO: 5] [CLOs: 2, 3, 5, 6]

When a person smokes, almost every single organ in his or her body is affected by the dangerous chemicals. Cigarette smoking is a lifestyle factor known to cause an increased risk of death and disease (US Department of Health and Human Services & Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2004). Prior to beginning work on this assignment, review Chapters 1, 10, and 15 in the course text and read them The Health Consequences of Smoking (Links to an external site.) report from this week’s reading.

Next, imagine you are employed as a worksite wellness professional for a major organization. The organization recently adopted a policy to make the campus smoke free. To help support this effort, you have decided to develop a PowerPoint to present to all employees that will:

  • Define the major health risks associated with cigarette smoking.
  • Examine the health benefits of smoking cessation.
  • Explain the benefits of a smoke-free environment for employees as well as the employer.
  • Generalize how the Stages of Change Model can be used to evaluate a person’s readiness to quit smoking.
  • Explain one way to motivate change at each stage of the Stages of Change Model.
  • Explain the importance of role modeling positive lifestyle habits.
  • Describe two smoking cessation aids.

For this assignment, you will be creating a PowerPoint Presentation with speaker’s notes. Your PowerPoint

Life Stressors [WLOs: 1, 2] [CLOs: 3, 4]<

Stress is a response by the body from demands placed on it and is incorporated into our lifestyle. Stressors come in two forms: eustress, known as good stress, and distress, known as bad stress. Both types of stress can result in a stress response. Stress can impact health and performance. College students are no exception. “About one-third of students who responded to the 2013 National College Health Assessment reported that their stress levels had negatively affected their academic performance,” (Powers & Dodd, 2017, p. 297). For this discussion, you will assess the amount of stress in your life and examine its effects on your health and wellness by completing the following tasks:

  • Take the Laboratory 11.2: Stress Index Questionnaire in your course textbook.
  • Tabulate your results and write them down along with a brief assessment of your results to be used in your discussion response.
  • Select one of the relaxation techniques that are listed in Chapter 11 of your text and practice the method.

In your discussion response, address the following items:

  • Discuss your results, from the Stress Index Questionnaire, stating your score and stress category. Were you surprised by your score?
  • Identity at least two of your major stressors impacting your wellness (only share stressors you are comfortable sharing).
  • Explain which dimensions of wellness are impacted by stress.
  • Describe the relaxation technique that you tried in your journal.
  • Do you think the relaxation technique you tried would be effective in reducing your stress level if practiced on a regular basis? Why or why not?
  • Elaborate on the major health risks and diseases associated with distress. Use a reference to support your comments.

Include the text and one additional scholarly reference correctly cited in APA style (Links to an external site.) as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center (Links to an external site.) to help support your response. HWE200 Week 3 – Journal

Dietary Intake Assessment

[WLOs: 1, 2, 6] [CLOs: 3, 4]

Dietary intake is a lifestyle factor that has a large effect on health and wellness. After reviewing the required materials for this week, assess your dietary intake by tracking your diet and using appropriate tools to review it. It is suggested you use the MyFitnessPal website or application (app) to assess your diet, but you may select a tool of your own as long as it provides you with an analysis of your diet.

To begin, keep a record of your food intake for at least one day. You may add your food directly into the MyFitnessPal website or app, or you may use the sample in the Food Diary – How to Keep Track of What You Eat (Links to an external site.) web page. You may also create something similar on your own. Assessing your food intake can help you determine which nutrients you are consuming in excess and which nutrients you need more of.  Be sure to include serving sizes and all beverages consumed. Review the MyFitnessPal Tutorial (Links to an external site.) and Introduction to MyFitnessPal (Links to an external site.) YouTube videos for assistance on logging your food and analyzing your diet.

Once you have logged your food intake on the MyFitnessPal website or app, scroll down and click on the nutrition tab. At the top of the Nutrition page, “Calories,” “Nutrients,” and “Macros” are displayed. Select each category to review your daily totals. Pay attention to the total amount consumed and your goal for each component. Finally, analyze your diet by answering the questions below in your journal. Your journal should contain the two parts described below.

Part 1: Assess your diet by addressing the following items:

  • Analyze your daily fat, saturated fat, sugar, carbohydrates, and caloric intake. Explain how your numbers compared with the goal levels.
  • Identify what vitamins and minerals fell below the goal level.
  • Elaborate on how your protein intake compared with the goal level. Discuss specific grams.
  • Explain the role and importance of consuming each of the following:
    • Minerals
    • Vitamins
    • Carbohydrates
    • Water
    • Protein
    • Fiber
    • Fat

Part 2: Examine the effects of your diet on your health and wellness by addressing the following items in your journal entry:

  • Identify the effect your diet has on your health and wellness. Does your dietary intake protect you or increase your health risks?
  • Explain two chronic diseases directly related to an unhealthy diet.
  • Explain two ways you could improve your diet. Be specific and provide examples.

For the journal assignment, write out each question and then answer it. Your journal should be a minimum of one page in length (not including the title page or reference page). As a minimum, include the course textbook and the dietary website you used as references in your response to this journal activity. Include an APA formatted title page and reference page. See the Introduction to APA (Links to an external site.) web page in the Ashford Writing Center (Links to an external site.) for guidance. Submit to Waypoint by Day 7.

Wellness Evaluation Lab 1.1

[WLOs: 1, 2, 3] [CLOs: 1, 3, 4, 7]

Learning how to manage personal lifestyle choices is known as the self-help approach. This approach assumes that individuals can control some aspects of the environment that contributes to harming health. This week, you have learned about the eight dimensions of wellness and how there must be a balance between these dimensions to achieve overall health and wellness. For this journal assignment, you will complete a personal assessment of each dimension of wellness.

To begin, assess your personal wellness by completing Laboratory 1-1: Wellness Evaluation on pages 21-26 of your course textbook. Write out your results and answers to these questions so it is easier to reference them within your journal (space to write your answers is included in the assessment).

In your journal, examine the effects of certain lifestyle factors on your wellness and think critically about your overall wellness by addressing the following bulleted items:

  • Describe your wellness score for each area of wellness.
  • Discuss your three weakest dimensions of wellness.
  • Explain what current lifestyle factors lead to these weaknesses.
  • If this dimension is not improved, what chronic disease may be the result? Use a reference to support this relationship.
  • Explain your three strongest dimensions of wellness.
  • Which of your lifestyle factors led to these strengths? Explain how.
  • Discuss one way you can improve one of your weakest dimensions of wellness. Write it down and note your progress throughout the week. You should use this area of weakness for your Final Project in Week 5.

For the journal assignment, write out each question and then answer it. Your journal should be a minimum of one page in length (not including the title page or reference page). As a minimum, include the course textbook as a reference in your response to this lab activity. Include an APA formatted title page and reference page. See the Introduction to APA (Links to an external site.) web page in the Ashford Writing Center (Links to an external site.) for additional guidance. Submit to Waypoint by Day 7.

Carmen: Dimensions of Wellness Case Study [WLOs: 1, 2] [CLOs: 1, 2, 3, 4, 7]

Many individuals spend a lifetime trying to achieve optimal health and wellness. Wellness is strongly related to our lifestyle choices. As noted by Powers and Dodd (2017), lifestyle, genetics, environment, and healthcare are the four factors that most influence health. Lifestyle has the biggest impact on health as 53% of all diseases are due to lifestyle.

Carmen and her two daughters

Carmen is a 45-year-old single mother of two children. She has a good job, has strong spiritual values and beliefs, and has three close friends who she gets together with on a regular basis. However, Carmen eats fast food five days a week, feels stressed out most of the time, and does not have time to exercise. She cares about the environment but does not take the time to recycle. She would love to go back to school to get her Masters of Business Administration degree but does not think she has the time. Her current occupation provides her with adequate money to take care of her children, but she finds herself struggling to pay her bills.

Review the eight dimensions of wellness listed in the text and address the following items in your post:

  • Evaluate which dimensions of wellness Carmen is strengthening with her current lifestyle and behaviors.
  • Describe which dimensions of wellness she needs to improve.
  • Explain three diseases Carmen is at risk for due to her poor lifestyle habits.
  • Identify three healthy lifestyle recommendations and examine how these lifestyle factors could help Carmen reduce her risk of disease and help her achieve overall wellness.
  • Identify one way Carmen can manage her finances better.
  • Include at least two scholarly references in addition to the textbook, follow APA formatting standards as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center to help support your response.
