HCS334 Week 5 – Journal

Personal Assessments and Goals

[WLOs: 4, 5] [CLOs: 4, 5, 6]

The focus is now on you! Prior to finishing this course, it is important to know where you stand in terms of each health-related component of physical fitness so that you can create specific goals for yourself. In Week 2, you examined your cardiorespiratory endurance and here is your chance to assess the other components and then reflect on your assessments, exercise behavior, and personalized goals. In this journal, address the following:

  • Summarize your cardiorespiratory endurance results from the Week 2 assignment (include your fitness category based on the previously chosen assessment).
  • Assess your muscular strength, as outlined in laboratory 4.1 of your course text. Please note: If you do not have access to the seated chest press and leg press machines, you can solely assess your muscular endurance, as described in the bullet point below.
  • Assess your muscular endurance, as outlined in laboratory 4.4 of your course text. Include your results for the push-up test, regular or modified, and curl-up test and state the respective category.
  • Evaluate your flexibility, as outlined in laboratory 5.2 of your course text. Include your results for the Sit-and-Reach Test and Shoulder Flexibility Test and include the respective category.
  • Assess your body composition by using the Body Mass Index (p. 164 of your course text). List your current BMI and note whether you are underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese. Please note: The BMI is not a perfect tool as some limitations exist. If you have access to other field methods as described in your text, feel free to use an alternate assessment.
  • Examine your exercise behaviors before you began this course. Determine whether you will have to alter your previous exercise behaviors and habits so that you can advance to the “next level” of fitness. Explain your answer and give examples.
  • Create four specific fitness-related goals that you have for yourself based on the assessments and the knowledge you acquired in this course.
  • Examine two strategies for success to achieve your goals.

Your journal should be at least two pages in length, not including the title and reference pages. Include at least two scholarly sources (one may be your course text). All sources must be cited and referenced according to APA guidelines, as outlined in the Ashford University Library.

Your initial discussion thread is due on Day 3 (Thursday) and you have until Day 7 (Monday) to respond to your classmates. Your grade will reflect both the quality of your initial post and the depth of your responses. Refer to the Discussion Forum Grading Rubric under the Settings icon above for guidance on how your discussion will be evaluated.

Body Composition and Optimal Body Weight [WLOs: 1, 2, 3] [CLOs: 1, 3, 4]<
Group of People

Prior to discussing the last major component of health-related physical fitness, please read chapters 6 and 9 of your course textbook, as well as the required resources, and view the How to Test and Improve Your Body Composition (Links to an external site.) video. “Having a high percentage of body fat is associated with an increased risk of developing CVD, type 2 diabetes, and some cancers. It also increases the risk of developing joint inflammation (arthritis). In general, excess fat elevates the risk of numerous health problems” (Powers & Dodd, 2017, p. 11).

  • To begin, visit a wellness practitioner (e.g., family practitioner, nurse practitioner, physician assistant, personal trainer, health coach, physical therapist, chiropractor, etc.) in your area to further learn about body composition and its impacts on health and wellbeing. Address the following:
    • Analyze the top three complaints the wellness practitioner has received relating to body composition. Note: The complaints do not have to include a specific chronic disease. Complaints, such as fatigue, lower back pain, shortness of breath, swelling in the legs, sleep apnea, as well as other physical and psychological complaints, may also be attributed to body composition.
    • Assess some possible causes for these complaints.
    • Explain how these complaints relate to the factors which influence weight management.
    • Approximately, how many clients with body composition-related complaints does the wellness practitioner see on a daily or weekly basis?
    • What three interventions does the practitioner recommend to minimize or eliminate these complaints?
    • Assess what health consequences could occur in the short- and long-term if these complaints are not addressed.
    • Which additional fact(s) or knowledge can the wellness practitioner share pertaining to body composition?
  • Assess three ways you can incorporate the practitioner’s expertise and your personal knowledge into your own life and/or the lives of future clients to regain and/or maintain optimal body weight.

Your initial post must be a minimum of 250 words in length and supported by at least one scholarly source, in addition to your textbook. Citations and references must meet APA formatting guidelines. Include the practitioner’s name, credentials, and location. You are welcome to scan and upload any body composition-centered materials provided by your wellness professional to share with the class. If you are unable to visit a practitioner, you may interview him or her via telephone or email.

Case Study: Mrs. Smith  [WLOs: 2, 3, 4, 5] [CLOs: 3, 4, 5, 6]<
Mrs. Smith

Prior to beginning work on this discussion, please read chapter 5 in your text and review the required resources.

Your client, Mrs. Smith, just began training with you. She complains of lower back pain and occasional neck pain. She sits for extended periods of time at work in an ill-fitting chair. She rarely exercises and always takes the elevator at work. Mrs. Smith is overweight by 40 lbs., she drinks three large diet sodas every day because she needs the caffeine to stay awake, and she smokes at least four cigarettes a day (usually after meals). After assessing her, you decide that her flexibility is poor and needs improvement.

Examine the exercise mode of flexibility by addressing the following:

  • Describe how you would assess Mrs. Smith’s flexibility.
    • Explain which flexibility test(s) you would select and explain your choices. Refer to the Chapter 5 Laboratory Activities in your course text.
    • Summarize the procedure for one of the flexibility tests that you would perform on your client.
  • Appraise the following and include what you will say to your client to educate and advise her regarding these elements:
    • The factors affecting flexibility.
    • The factors associated with lower back and neck pain.
    • The benefits of a flexibility program.
  • Develop a flexibility plan by selecting four exercises or stretches that would be useful for Mrs. Smith to begin addressing her neck and back pain. For each of the four exercises:
    • Identify the muscles used when performing these exercises/stretches. You must use the correct medical terminology for the muscles used in each exercise (i.e., rather than saying back muscles, clearly state the specific name(s) of the muscles targeted via your exercises).
    • Briefly describe the following to your client:
      • How often and when to perform the exercises/stretches.
      • The type of stretch.
      • How long to hold the stretch.
  • Discuss three prevention tips for your client to assist her with beginning to make lifestyle changes that will have a great impact on her pain levels and tiredness.

Your initial post must be at least 250 words and contain at least one scholarly source, in addition to your course textbook. All sources must be cited in APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.

Experiencing Flexibility Training [WLOs: 1, 2] [CLOs: 1, 3]<
Stretching

For this discussion, you will experience a type of flexibility training and reflect on your experience. To prepare for this discussion, please read Chapter 5 in your text and review the required resources.

  • To begin, select one of these practices: Tai Chi, yoga, or Pilates. Describe the benefits of your chosen practice and explain its relationship to wellness.
  • Then, engage in one of these activities by taking a course at your local gym, a recreation center, park, or a private studio. If you do not have access to a live class, you may find a digital alternative such as a class from a website, the on-demand channel on TV, a fitness video game, or a DVD. Be creative in finding a class. You may also check your local library for videos.
  • Next, examine your experience with flexibility training by addressing the following:
    • Describe the session, the setting, and three exercises within the session.
    • Which muscles did these three exercises address? You must use the correct medical terminology for the muscles used in each exercise.
    • Examine the relationship between flexibility training and wellness by rating your stress level and muscle tension before and after the session on a scale of 1 to 10 (with 10 being the highest).
    • Explain any differences you may have felt physically or mentally after the session.
    • Would you continue to incorporate these exercises into your ongoing flexibility training and/or recommend this flexibility training to your friends or colleagues?

Your initial post must be a minimum of 250 words. Use at least one scholarly reference properly cited and referenced according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center

Resistance Training Case Study

[WLOs: 3, 4] [CLOs: 3, 4, 5, 6]

Prior to beginning work on this assignment, watch the Weight Training vs Low Intensity Cardio—Best Way to Burn Fat? (Links to an external site.) video and read the required articles. On pages 114-124 of your course text, Laboratory Assessment Activities 4-1, 4-2, 4-4, and 4-5 describe how muscular strength and endurance can be assessed. Prior to beginning this assignment, review all four of these assessment activities, and select one of the case studies below for use in this assignment.

Jolene
Case Study #1:Jolene is a 34-year-old woman who weighs 137 pounds. Jolene is 65 inches tall, healthy, and does not have any known medical issues. Her one-repetition maximum (1RM) for each of the following exercises is as follows:
Seated Chest Press: 70 lbs.
Leg Press: 120 lbs. Curl-ups (1 minute): 19
Modified push-ups (1 minute): 24
Julio
Case Study #2:Julio is a 49-year-old man who weighs 220 pounds. Julio is 76 inches tall, healthy, and does not have any known medical issues.   His one-repetition maximum (1RM) for each of the following exercises is as follows:Seated Chest Press: 180 lbs.Leg press: 340 lbs. Curl-ups (1 minute): 24

Once you have selected a case study, complete the following steps:

  • First, thoroughly examine the assessments used to obtain the provided results for your client by addressing the following:
    • What is the purpose of each of the assessments?
    • What are the benefits of performing multiple assessments?
    • Compare each of the assessments to one another. What is different and/or similar between them?
  • Next, assess the muscular strength and endurance status of your client by addressing the following:
    • Calculate your client’s strength and endurance using Laboratory Assessments 4-1 and 4-4.
    • Explain the results to your client (from your selected case study). Use your client’s name and write as if you were speaking directly to her/him.
  • Then, develop an effective resistance-training exercise plan by addressing the following:
    • Complete the “Exercise Chart  download” for your client.
      • Select eight exercises that will enhance your client’s muscular fitness.
      • Illustrate the intensity and duration by indicating the numbers for the set(s), reps, and weight that will be required.
      • Designate a frequency by indicating the dates that each session should occur.
      • Demonstrate your understanding of progressive overload. This can be designated in the plan through writing a detailed statement in the “Notes” section of the log.
  • Next, explain the assessment results and exercise plan to your client (from your selected case study). Use your client’s name and act as if you were speaking directly to him or her. After explaining the results of the assessments, provide your rationale for each component of the plan: exercises, intensity, duration, frequency, and progressive overload.
  • Lastly, assess two factors that can impact your client’s muscular strength (e.g., gender, diet, hormones, muscle size, muscle mass, and muscle fiber recruitment). Explain these factors to your client.
  • Submit your assignment for grading using the Assignment Submission Button.

Note: You are encouraged to integrate any feedback from your instructor and upload the assignment to your ePortfolio. Learn more about Folio, Ashford’s ePortfolio tool, by viewing the Folio Quick Start Guide (Links to an external site.).

Be as specific as possible when addressing the above elements and remember to include an introduction and conclusion in your paper. In addition to your course text, include a minimum of two scholarly and/or credible sources that are cited according to APA style. Your assignment must be at least five pages in length, excluding the title and reference pages. Your paper and all sources must be formatted in APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.

Resistance Training Exercise Demonstration [WLOs: 1, 2] [CLOs: 1, 4]<

Muscular strength and muscular endurance are other major components of health-related physical fitness. Prior to entering into this discussion, review this week’s required and recommended readings that highlight various resistance exercises, along with pictures and a description for each exercise. However, do not feel limited to use only the exercises presented in your readings but instead, feel free to utilize additional exercises from online sources such as TrainOnline.com (Links to an external site.)acefitness.org (Links to an external site.)Fitness.com (Links to an external site.), or similar credible online sources of interest to you. Be creative and have fun!

For this discussion, examine exercise prescription by selecting and demonstrating three strength training exercises using video as your means of presentation.

  • To begin, select one exercise for each of the major muscle groups (lower, core, and upper body). The goal of this assignment is to compile a large assortment of exercises among all class members. Therefore, do not hesitate to choose some of the less common exercises.
  • Then, decide on a recording and presentation method for your exercises using one of the following options:
    • Option A: Direct Video Recording:
      • Write a script for each of your exercises. Name and save your script as a MS Word document.
      • Record the exercises using a cell phone or digital video camera. Be sure to clearly demonstrate the starting position and movement (Refer back to pages 104-110 of your course text for examples) of each exercise.
      • Upload your video to YouTube (Android (Links to an external site.) ; iPhone/iPad (Links to an external site.)) or other web-based video platform and obtain a link to share with others.
      • Paste your video link and script within your initial post in this discussion forum.
    • Option B: Create a Screencast of a PowerPoint (or equivalent) presentation:
      • Take photos of key points in each exercise and place them in PowerPoint using appropriate titling and transitions. (Refer back to pages 104-110 of your course text for examples.)
      • Write speaker’s notes as a script for each of your exercises at the bottom of each slide.
      • Use either Jing  downloador Screencast-O-Matic  downloadto record your presentation and voice. (You will need either a laptop’s built-in microphone or an external microphone headset to record your voice.)
      • Using either screen cast software package, obtain a link to share with others.
      • Paste your video link and post your PowerPoint file within your initial post in this discussion forum.

Your chosen method should entail the following components for each exercise:

  • The starting position and movement should be clearly performed and commented on. Some exercises may have a third component. Should this be the case, it must be addressed as well. Watch for proper form and movement in your demonstration.
  • The muscles (primary and/or secondary) that are worked in the exercise. You must use the correct medical terminology for the muscles worked. Stating the back or shoulder is not sufficient.
  • Any equipment needed, if applicable to the exercise.
  • Expert tips regarding the exercise such as what to look for when observing someone performing the exercise, what to avoid when performing the exercise, placement of feet or other body parts, safety precautions, etc.
  • Copy and paste the link to your screencast or video (do not include it as an attachment) into the discussion post, along with your video script or PowerPoint presentation (do not convert your PowerPoint presentation to PDF as the speaker notes sections cannot be viewed in PDF format) slide deck. Be prepared before you get in front of the camera as videos should be 10 minutes in length or less.
  • Finally, within your initial post, briefly describe in writing how your chosen strength exercises improve overall fitness and wellness.

Use at least one reference in your post formatted in APA style, as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center. If, for any reason, you are unable to complete these exercise demonstrations yourself, please contact your instructor for alternative options. Remember, all individuals performing these exercises must be 18 years or older and agree to the Consent and Release of Liability Waiver Terms, specified within the Week 1 specific section.

HCS334 Week 2 – Assignment

Cardiorespiratory Assessment and Prescription

[WLOs: 3, 4] [CLOs: 4, 5, 6]

Prior to beginning work on this assignment, watch the Cardiovascular Benefits of Exercise (Links to an external site.) video and review the required resources in this week’s section. For this assignment, you will assess your personal cardiorespiratory fitness level and develop a cardiorespiratory exercise plan for yourself. If you are unable to personally complete any of these tasks due to health concerns, please contact your instructor immediately.

For this assignment, you will:

a. Examine the relationship between cardiorespiratory endurance and wellness using two examples from two different scholarly sources and/or credible sources (outside your course text).

b. Assess your cardiorespiratory fitness level.

  • Complete either “The 1.5-Mile Run” (Laboratory 3.1A), “The 1-Mile Walk” (Laboratory 3.1B), or the “Step Test” (Laboratory 3.1D) Assessment (these labs are found in your textbook). If you choose the step test, you will need a metronome (may be available for free as an app).
    • Summarize the methods of the test.
    • Provide your exact results.
      • Length of time to complete The 1.5-Mile Run/1-Mile Walk Test or
      • Total (recovery index based on post-exercise heart rate (beats per minute-BPM), as indicated in laboratory 3.1, for the Step Test.
    • Interpret your assessment results in terms of your overall cardiovascular endurance.
    • Identify your fitness category based on your gender and age range (the latter will apply for the walk and run assessment).

c. Develop a complete cardiorespiratory exercise plan that will help you achieve the next level of fitness in the assessment chosen above.

  • The first step for developing an exercise plan is to determine your fitness goals. Typically, your goals should be to increase to the next higher fitness category level or to maintain your current fitness level. For this assignment, assume your goal is to achieve the next level of cardiorespiratory fitness for your selected test.
  • The next step is to create a complete personal exercise plan by integrating the components of the Frequency, Intensity, Time, and Type (FITT) principle. For this assignment, briefly summarize each of the FITT principles. Then, give a specific example for each principle within your plan.
    • Frequency: How many days per week are you going to perform cardiorespiratory exercise? Provide a justification for your selection. Remember that frequency is dependent upon intensity (below).
    • Intensity: Calculate your target heart rate (THR), as outlined in chapter 3. Laboratory 3.3 will help in guiding you through this calculation.
      • Indicate the target heart rate range at which you should complete your training.
    • Time (or duration): How long will you exercise for? Remember to base your decision on your current level of fitness and your training intensity.
    • Type (or mode): List some additional activities that you may be able to engage in to meet your cardiorespiratory exercise plans. Refer to Table 3.2 for ideas for different activities, however, feel free to explore activities other than the ones listed in this textbook as well.
  • Lastly, your exercise plan should contain an activity schedule in table form  download, so that it is easy for the plan recipient to follow. Complete Laboratory 3.4 in your course text, using the FITT information you came up with above. Include the weekly activity schedule illustration of your exercise plan from this assessment in your assignment submission. Be sure to also include a note on warm-up and cool-down information below your illustration.

Tennis Players

Prior to beginning work on this discussion, read Chapter 3 in your course text and the Aerobic Exercise Attenuates Ageing of the Athletic Heart (Banks, 2016) article. As you may have already noted, your final project is a PowerPoint presentation. Therefore, let’s work on creating effective presentations while also discussing cardiorespiratory endurance. Have fun!

  • Appraise two factors affecting cardiorespiratory endurance performance (i.e., effectiveness of cardiovascular and respiratory systems, effectiveness of the pulmonary and systemic circuit, diet, hydration, genetics, gender, age, weight, altitude).
  • Select one cardiorespiratory endurance exercise of your choice.
  • Explain how your body creates energy when performing your chosen exercise for 30 minutes. Support your explanation with the course text or another scholarly source.
  • Assess two responses and two adaptations that would result from performing your chosen exercise (and/or other cardiorespiratory endurance exercises) on a regular basis.
  • Examine the relationship between cardiorespiratory endurance and wellness by describing two health-related benefits you are currently reaping or hoping to reap from your chosen exercise and regular cardiorespiratory endurance training.
  • Create a PowerPoint presentation with this information listed above and add speaker notes beneath each slide.
    • Length: four slides, plus a title and reference slide (six slides total at a minimum).
    • Support your research with your course text and at least one additional scholarly source.
      • All sources must be cited within your presentation and referenced in APA style, as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.
    • Review the rubric  download, which you will be reviewed on by your peers, prior to finalizing your PowerPoint presentation.

Physical Inactivity Rates [WLOs: 1, 2] [CLOs: 2, 4]<

After reading the required resources for this week, let’s shift our attention to physical inactivity rates. As you will discover, a large number of Americans is physically inactive. Let’s take a look at global, national, state, county, and individual inactivity rates, as well as some potential health consequences of a sedentary lifestyle.

Global and National:

Assess the physical inactivity data on the World Health Organization (WHO) website including the Insufficient Physical Activity (Links to an external site.) (choose “Adults, both sexes” via the “View more Indicators” tab on the top left) interactive map and the Prevalence of Insufficient Physical Activity Among Adults Data by Country (Links to an external site.) dataset.

  • Which countries have problems with physical inactivity? Please name five.
  • How does the U.S. rank in terms of its physical inactivity?

State:

Examine the Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Obesity: Data, Trends and Maps (Links to an external site.) (choose your state, and select “Physical Activity” for category, and “Physical Activity Behavior” for Topic, as well as the most current year of available data).

  • List the percentage of adults who do not engage in leisure time physical activity in your state.
  • How does the CDC determine whether an adult is physically inactive or not (see Footnotes)?

County:

Evaluate your specific county’s physical activity rate via the County Health Rankings (Links to an external site.) link (choose your state, then click on your county via the “Overall Rankings in Health Factors” map. Physical inactivity data can be found under the “Health Behaviors” data.

  • Compare and contrast the county data to the rest of the state and to the nation.

Individual:

Describe your personal contribution to the physical inactivity prevalence rate for your county. Is your physical inactivity level below, at, or above the currently listed rate?

Health Consequences:

Assess two potential health consequences of physical inactivity or sedentary behaviors. Support your assessment with at least one scholarly source.

Your initial post must be a minimum of 250 words in length and supported with at least one scholarly source. Ensure all sources used for your posting are properly cited and referenced, according to APA formatting guidelines.
